Better Cooperation

Our Principles

VOLUNTARY AND OPEN MEMBERSHIP

We are are a voluntary organization, open to all persons able to use our services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political, or religious discrimination.

DEMOCRATIC MEMBER CONTROL

We are a democratic organization where members actively participate in setting policies and making decisions on the principle of one member one vote.

MEMBER ECONOMIC PARTICIPATION

Members contribute to and democratically control the capital of the co-operative. Part of the capital is the common property of the co-operative. The co-operative’s surplus is either distributed to members in proportion to their transactions or directed to other activities approved by the membership.

AUTONOMY AND INDEPENDENCE

We are an autonomous, self-helping organization and when we enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, or raise capital from external sources, we do so on terms that ensure democratic control by our members and maintain the co-operative autonomy.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND INFORMATION

We provide education and training for our members and executive team so they can contribute effectively to the development of the platform. We also strive to inform the general public – particularly young people and opinion leaders – about the nature and benefits of co-operation.

CO-OPERATION AMONG CO-OPERATIVES

We serve our members and strengthen the co-operative movement by working in solidarity with other co-ops and national, regional, and international co-operative organizations.

CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY

We work for the sustainable development of communities through policies approved by our members.
